One Friday morning, a teacher came up with a novel way to
motivate her class. She told them that she would read a quote
and the first student to correctly identify who said it would receive
the rest of the day off. She started with "This was England's finest hour. " Little Suzy instantly jumped up and said, " Winston Churchill." "Congratulations said the teacher you may go home." The teacher then said, "Ask not what your country can do for you." Before she could finish this quote, another young lady belts out, "John F. Kennedy". "Very good" says the teacher, "you may go." Irritated that he has missed two golden opportunities, Little Johnny said, "I wish those girls would just shut up." Upon overhearing this comment, the outraged teacher demanded to know who said it. Johnny instantly rose to his feet and said, "Bill Clinton. I'll see you Monday." | |||

The first, by Churchill, was delivered on 18 June 1940, toward the end of the war against Germany. A little more of the quotation: Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Commonwealth and its Empire lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.' The Kennedy quotation comes from his inaugural address on 20 January 1961. He probably took it from another quotation, one by the son of a famous American writer, Oliver Wendell Holmes. The full quotation is: And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. |

Bikkieさんからコメントをいただきました！な、な、なるほど(^^;;;．．．これで面白さがよくわかりますね(^^) チャーチルの引用についてはわたしもよく知らないのですが、Ｊ．Ｆ．Kennedyの"Ask not what your country can do for you." は「国が自分のためにできるこ とを問うな。」つまり、「国から何かをしてもらうのではなく、国のために自分 が何をできるかを考えろ。」という意味だと思います。 それから、" I wish those girls would just shut up." 以降の訳について。 「あの二人の女の子さえ、黙っててくれたらよかったのに。」 この言葉を聞いた先生は怒って聞いた。「誰が言ったの？」 ジョニーはすかさず、飛び上がって答えた。 「ビル・クリントン。 さようなら、また来週。」 つまり、先生は " I wish . . . shut up. "なんて失礼なことを言った生徒を叱ろうと思って「誰が言ったの（今、しゃべったのは誰）？」と問いただしたのです。 ところが、そこはジョニーが一枚うわてで、すかさず先生の質問を引用のクイズにすり替えて「ビル・クリントン」と答えたわけです。 もちろん、自分で言った「girls」の意味もその時点で「クラスの女の子たち」から「ポーラ・ジョーンズ と モニカ・ルインスキー」にすり替わったのです。 |
